There is process in communication that involves delivering a message from the sender to the receiver through utterance called speech act. Speech act occur in both real-life and fictional context. In this study, the author examines the illocutionary activities performed by characters in the movie Purple Hearts. The aims of this undergraduate thesis are: 1) What is the dominant types of directives illocutionary act utterance in the movie Purple Hearts?; 2) how are the directives illocutionary act used in the movie Purple Hearts. The method employed in this undergraduate thesis is qualitative descriptive study. The data of this undergraduate thesis taken from a movie script. The title of the movie that is used in this undergraduate thesis is Purple Hearts. The result of this undergraduate thesis shows that from 132 data, there are 5 types of directives illocutionary act, they are Questioning (65 data), Request (27 data), Advice (29), Demanding (8 data), and Prohibition (4 data). The writer hopesthat this present study will give a contribution to the readers for a better understanding of speech act, especially in the directives illocutionary act, and the writer hopesthat this present study can be an additional reference for those who are interested in learning more about speech act.
