The purpose of this study is to determine the quality of the of English summative test for the
first semester of the eleventh grade of MAN 2 Kota Tangerang in academic year 2017/2018
in terms of validity, reliability, level of difficulty, distinguishing power, and the distracter
effectiveness. This research uses qualitative and quantitative method. The writer took 104
students grade XI IPS as a sample in this research by using simple random sampling
technique. Data collecting that uses in this research is documentation method. Data is
analyzed by Anates program version 4.0.9. The analysis shows that: (1) items of multiple
choice questions that can be said as valid totaling 33 items (94.3%), while the invalid items
amounted to 2 items (5.7%). Whereas in the form of essay questions, all 5 items are
categorized as valid (100%); (2) items of multiple choice questions can be said as medium
reliable because multiple choice questions has 0.57 and the essay question was 0.41; (3)
items of multiple choice questions that categorized to easy items are 10 items (28,6%),
medium category 17 items (48,6%), and hard category are 8 items (22,8%). While in essay
questions, there are 2 items (40%) in easy category, 2 items (40%) in medium category and
difficult is 1 item (20%); (4) items of multiple choice questions that categorized to poor items
are 17 items (48.6%), satisfactory item are 7 items (20%), good item are 8 items (22.8%),
excellent item are 0 item (0%) and very poor item are 3 items (8.6%). While for the essay
questions that have the poor item is 1 item (20%), satisfactory are 2 items (40%), excellent
are 2 items (40%); (5) distractor effectiveness, there are 13 items (37.2%) had good
distractors, 9 items (25.7%) had fair distractors, 11 items (31.4%) less good distractor and not
good distractors are 2 items (5.7%). So, the quality of English summative test for the first
semester of the eleventh grade of MAN 2 Kota Tangerang in academic year 2017/2018 have
not fulfill the criteria standard of a good test.
