The effect of grammar translation method on students’ reading skill at the eighth grade of SMP Nusa Putra Tangerang in academic year 2016-2017
In this mini-thesis, the writer tries to find out if there is any effect of Grammar
Translation Method on students‟ reading skill at the eighth grade of SMP Nusa
Putra Tangerang in academic year 2016-2017. In reading skill students may have
some difficulties in reading practice because they do not understand the meaning
of the text what they read. By using Grammar Translation Method will help them
to understand it. Grammar Translation Method is classic teaching language
method but this method is still used by English lesson teacher. Because this
method can be used by teacher who is not fluent in English.
Then to support this research, the writer uses quasi-experimental approach and use
experiment, and post-test. The result of the research, showed the comparison score
between two class of eighth grade of the school, they are experiment class which
get treatment and the other class is control class does not get treatment. The
hypothesis is the class with using Grammar Translation Method will have higher
score then the class without using Grammar Translation Method.
The result of this research is there is a difference on the students‟ reading skill of
the class which is taught by using Grammar Translation Method and those without
using Grammar Translation Method. It is shown by the value of the T-observed is
4.568 and the value of the T- table is 2.010. It means that the value of the Tobserved is greater than the value of the T-table. On the other hand, from the Pvalue, it can be seen that the significance level lies on 0.000. It is smaller than α
0.05. It means that the hypothesis is accepted.
