The effect of directed reading thinking activity (DRTA) on students’ reading comprehension at the tenth grade of SMAN 14 Kota Tangerang in academic year 2018/2019


This research aimed to finding out the effect of Directed Reading Thinking
Activity On The Students Reading Comprehension at tenth grade of SMAN 14 Kota
Tangerang. This research was quantitative with the quasi-experimental research and
supported by qualitative data. The population of the research is the tenth grade students
with the total population is 137. The writer using the purposive sampling to choose the
sample, and got 72 students to two classes: class experimental and class control. The
experimantal class (X IPA-1 ) which was taught by Directed Reading Thinking Activity
(DRTA) strategy, whereas the control class (X IPA-2) which was taught by the
Conventional Instruction (CI). The writer used the written test to collect the data, and
counting the data with the chi square formula to test data normality, fisher formula to test
data homogeneity. The result of this research showed the students’ score of reading
comprehension after taught by those strategy are good, because the mean value of posttest which was taught by DRTA is higher than students which was taught by CI strategy.
So, the gained results of the research indicated that DRTA is an effective strategy on
improving students’ reading comprehension.
